DEN Dressing, a hometown favorite.

Who would’ve thought a salad dressing could have inspired so much love?

Since the 1950s, Erie has had a love affair with Den dressing, a tangy, sweet red sauce that has been a staple at Sunday suppers, backyard barbecues, and of course, atop salads. It wasn’t pretty when production stopped in the 1980s and again in 2018 and fans could no longer get their hands on a bottle of the sauce. Some stocked up, buying it by the case to ensure they had a stash. Others turned to recipe sites online desperately trying to re-create the recipe or locate a lone bottle. Both times, local entrepreneur and owner of The Skunk & Goat Tavern, Billy Lewis, saw an opportunity to reunite fans with their lost love. This spring, after purchasing back the rights, Lewis and his children headed to the kitchen with that original recipe from 1989. By August, the first batch was for sale at The Skunk & Goat Tavern.
